Best Time to Visit Madagascar: Months, Regions and Routes

Madagascar has a warmer, wetter summer from November to March and a cooler, drier winter from April to October. Across the island, however, those seasons create very different travel conditions.

The east coast is exposed to humid trade winds and receives rain even during the drier months. In the central highlands, nights can be surprisingly cold in June, July and August. The west and southwest are much drier and usually remain warm during the day.

Once you know which landscapes appeal to you most, choosing the right travel period becomes surprisingly straightforward.

January to March is hot, tropical and vividly green. During these months, trips are best focused on accessible regions with flexible daily plans because heavy rainfall can affect roads and boat connections.

Rain eases in many areas during April. The landscape is still lush, although showers remain possible. May often brings an appealing balance of green scenery, comfortable temperatures and more stable roads.

June to August are classic travel months. Warm clothing is useful in the highlands, especially in the morning and evening. Many western tracks are drier, while Andasibe can still be wet.

September and October grow warmer. Reptiles and other animals become more active, many roads remain passable and the days suit longer nature programmes. November marks the transition towards the rainy season.

The drier months are especially important for Morondava, Kirindy and the tracks to Bekopaka. From May to October, river crossings and unpaved sections are usually easier to plan.

Tsingy de Bemaraha is a highlight of the drier season. Once the park, tracks and river crossings are open, the route combines vast landscapes with an extraordinary day of hiking among limestone pinnacles.

September to early November can be rewarding in Kirindy because warmer temperatures tend to increase wildlife activity. Sightings, of course, can never be guaranteed.

The RN7 can be travelled during a broader part of the year than many remote track routes. May to October is particularly well suited to Ranomafana, Isalo and the southwest coast.

Mornings in the highlands can feel close to freezing in June and July, while Isalo may be warm and sunny on the very same day. Layers therefore work better than packing only for summer.

A rain jacket and shoes with good grip belong in your bag for Ranomafana in every month. The rainforest remains humid, and that is exactly what gives it its character.

Andasibe and the east coast stay green throughout the year. From April to November, sunny spells and shorter showers often alternate in a way that works well for forest days and boat journeys.

From January to March, the tropical character of the east is at its strongest. Travellers during this period should allow more flexibility for roads, park trails and boat days.

The humidity is what makes the forest so alive: lemur calls, frogs, chameleons, ferns and mosses create an experience entirely different from the dry west.

June to September is a good basis if stable road conditions are your priority. For greener scenery, look more closely at April, May or the transition period in November.

Wildlife viewing never depends on the month alone. Time of day, temperature, fruiting seasons, local guides and simple luck matter just as much.

Climate patterns provide the framework. The actual order of your trip then comes from the places you want to see, the season and the connections that work best for your dates.

Shortly before departure, road sections, park access and boat or ferry connections are checked again. Your trip starts with a clear plan while retaining room for an especially worthwhile stop along the way.
