Madagascar rewards travellers who give each region time. A morning filled with indri calls, a full day hiking in Isalo or a boat trip on the Pangalanes Canal will stay with you longer than one more place name added to a crowded list.
Whether you have ten days, two weeks or three weeks does not decide whether the trip will be memorable. What matters is choosing a route that fits that amount of time. Below are three clear time frames and the journeys that genuinely work within them.
AT A GLANCE · 10 min · July 2026
Choosing the right time frame
- 10 days work beautifully for Andasibe and the Pangalanes Canal: compact, green and varied.
- 14 days give one major route the right rhythm: the west and Tsingy, or the RN7, Isalo and Ifaty.
- 21 days allow you to combine two regions while retaining time for nature days, transitions and a relaxed end to the journey.
DISTANCE IS NOT DRIVING TIME
Why road days in Madagascar are part of the experience
Distances tell only part of the story. Rice fields and highland villages unfold beyond Antananarivo, savannah and small market towns line the road to Morondava, and the scenery along the RN7 changes almost from one stage to the next.
National parks are most rewarding when you give them full days. A walk can begin in the morning, follow signs of wildlife and finish without one eye on the next departure.
A good route alternates road days with genuine experience days. That creates rhythm and variety instead of a long sequence of transfers.

10 DAYS
A compact journey through rainforest and waterways
Ten days are enough for a genuine Madagascar trip if the route stays compact. The east, combining Andasibe and Akanin’ny Nofy, brings together rainforest, lemurs and the Pangalanes Canal without requiring a domestic flight.
Day one is for arriving, while the penultimate day brings you back to Antananarivo. In between, there is room for two full forest days and several nights by the water.
If baobabs, Tsingy or the full RN7 are your priority, choose the 14-day format and give those large landscapes more space.
A good fit
Andasibe, Mantadia, Akanin’ny Nofy and the Pangalanes Canal.
Choose more time
The 14-day format is better for Morondava, Isalo or the full RN7.
14 DAYS
One major route with time for its highlights
Fourteen days give one great landscape route the right rhythm. In the west, there is time for the highlands, Morondava, Kirindy, Bekopaka and full days in Tsingy.
Along the RN7, you can connect Antsirabe, Ranomafana, Fianarantsoa, Anja, Isalo and Ifaty. A domestic flight from Toliara can shorten the return journey, but it should be followed by a buffer night before your international departure.
For a two-week trip, choose one of these two major journeys. That gives either the baobabs and Tsingy, or the rainforest and Isalo, the time that makes them special.

21 DAYS
Combine two regions into one larger journey
Three weeks create room for one major road route and a second, well-connected region. The contrast makes the journey richer without sacrificing its rhythm.
One combination could begin in Andasibe and continue along the RN7. Another could pair the west with several days in the highlands or a beach stay reached by air.
A domestic flight can elegantly shorten a long return journey. A night in Antananarivo then creates an easy transition from the regional trip to your international flight.
Nature combination
Andasibe and Pangalanes, followed by the RN7 to Isalo or Ifaty.
Western combination
Morondava, Kirindy and Tsingy, complemented by the highlands or a few quiet days at the end.
Important
Allow at least one buffer night before your international departure.
THREE ROUTES COMPARED
Which route matches your interests?
The east is compact, green and particularly strong for lemurs and rainforest. The RN7 offers the greatest variety of landscapes. The west combines baobabs, dry forest and the extraordinary limestone formations of Tsingy.
- East, 10 days: rainforest, indris, boat travel and a gentler pace
- RN7, 14 days: highlands, culture, rainforest, Isalo and the coast
- West, 14 days: baobabs, Kirindy, remote tracks and Tsingy de Bemaraha
- 21 days: two regions connected through deliberately planned transitions
DAY ONE AND THE FINAL NIGHT
Arrival is already part of the journey
After an international flight, the first day begins slowly: drop off your luggage, change some money, settle in and take in your first impressions of the capital.
The final night in Antananarivo also belongs to the shape of the journey. After a domestic flight, boat transfer or remote track, there is time for dinner and an unhurried transition to your flight home.
VEHICLE AND RETURN JOURNEY
Coordinating your flight and the vehicle return
If the road trip ends in Toliara or Morondava, a domestic flight can take you comfortably back to the highlands. The 4x4 then returns to Antananarivo; the additional vehicle days and fuel are shown transparently in your quote.
The eastern route ends in Antananarivo and needs no separate vehicle return. You can therefore see from the start which option best fits your time and budget.
A SIMPLE START
What we need for an initial route suggestion
You do not need a finished day-by-day itinerary. To begin, your travel dates, group size, preferred regions and whether nature, hiking, culture or relaxation matters most are enough.
- possible arrival and departure dates
- number of travellers and approximate luggage volume
- your two to four most important destinations
- preferred activity level
- any domestic or international flights already booked
