10 Days in Eastern Madagascar: Andasibe, Indris & Pangalanes

After landing at Ivato Airport, your driver takes you to the accommodation. First views of rice fields, brick houses and densely built hills introduce the central highlands.

This day remains free of scheduled travel. You can change money, settle in and recover from the international flight.

The journey east begins the next morning. Luggage, departure time and the first stops are agreed in advance.

The RN2 leaves Antananarivo through the eastern suburbs before following green valleys, rice fields and wooded slopes. The scenery grows more tropical and the air noticeably more humid with every hour.

A reptile and chameleon reserve around Marozevo can make a worthwhile stop. It offers a first encounter with some of the colours and forms that make Madagascar’s wildlife so distinctive.

By afternoon, the air is damper and the forest denser. You settle into Andasibe for three nights and, with luck, hear the first indri calls the following morning.

The walk in Analamazaotra begins early. Trails lead through humid forest filled with ferns, orchids and moss-covered trunks. A local guide follows the calls of indris while also watching for smaller lemurs, birds, frogs and chameleons.

Indris are often heard before they are seen. Their powerful calls travel through the forest until the guide locates a group in the canopy. Andasibe is one of the most memorable places to experience Madagascar’s largest lemur.

After a break at the accommodation, a guided night walk outside the national park can follow in the early evening. Torchlight may reveal mouse lemurs, sleeping chameleons and tiny tree frogs.

Mantadia feels wilder and more expansive than Analamazaotra. The access road is already part of the experience before different circuits lead deeper into the tropical mountain forest.

Together with a local guide, you choose a trail through tree ferns, moss-covered trunks and deep green valleys. Along the way, the guide watches for diademed sifakas, indris, chameleons and rare birds.

Mantadia rewards a measured pace. Travellers who move attentively keep discovering new details between leaves and branches, from tiny frogs to brightly coloured chameleons.

After breakfast, you continue east along the RN2. Beyond the wooded hills, the humid coastal plain opens with traveller’s palms, lakes and small settlements.

The road stage ends near Manambato. Passengers and luggage transfer to a motorboat while the driver looks after the vehicle. The boat crosses Lake Rasoabe and follows narrow waterways between traveller’s palms and small villages.

Akanin’ny Nofy is accessible only by water on the Pangalanes Canal. After arrival, there is time to enjoy the stillness of the lake and enter the evening without another road journey.

The day belongs to the surroundings of Akanin’ny Nofy. With a local guide, lakeside trails and forest bring encounters with lemurs, endemic plants and the characteristic vegetation of the humid east coast.

The animals move freely within the reserve. Keeping your distance, remaining quiet and following the guide’s advice help ensure the encounter does not become a staged photo stop.

The afternoon remains free for the lake, lodge or a walk. After the active forest days in Andasibe, a slower day by the water is welcome.

A boat trip reveals the Pangalanes Canal as a lifeline of the east coast. Pirogues carry people and goods, fishers work along the banks and villages between the lakes are barely accessible by road.

The most suitable stops depend on weather, water level and the chosen boat programme. The aim is to offer insight without turning everyday life along the canal into a backdrop.

In the evening, a guided boat trip may visit an aye-aye observation site. Gliding across the still lake in darkness while looking for Madagascar’s most unusual lemur is an experience in itself.

In the morning, the boat returns you to Manambato. Your driver is waiting with the 4x4 and the journey back towards Andasibe begins.

The familiar route feels different in reverse. Beyond the humid coastal lowlands, the road and landscape climb once again into the rainforest belt.

Another night in Andasibe turns the return into one more rainforest evening, with time for the lodge, the sounds of the forest and a relaxed start the next morning.

After a relaxed breakfast, you return to Antananarivo. Rainforest slopes, rice fields and highland villages change the scenery one last time along the way.

In Antananarivo, there is time for a final dinner, local crafts or simply a break at the accommodation.

The final night in the capital gives the journey a calm ending, with time for a good meal and one last view over the city’s hills.

On the final day, your driver takes you to Ivato Airport with sufficient time. If the flight leaves late, the morning may still allow for a market or viewpoint.

If you are staying longer, continue to the baobabs in the west or the vast landscapes of the RN7. With additional days, the eastern route becomes the green opening chapter of a longer Madagascar journey.
